What are Brits saying about Mitt Romney?

Posted on September 18, 2012 by yankeebean

I have both a fabulous group of liberal friends and an outstanding group of conservative-ish friends here in the UK.  Most of them agree that David Cameron is an idiot and Boris Johnson is hilarious.  All of them seem to think that Obama is awesome and should get another 4 years.  And then he should fly over to England and become the Prime Minister.

But what about Mitt Romney?  After Mitt’s video in which he writes off 47% of the American population as people he’s ‘not going to worry about’, I have to ask everyone – what are your peeps saying about this guy?

I haven’t heard that much about him from my friends.  There was some banter after Mitt hated on the London 2012 Olympics, but it was passing commentary.  The vibe I get is that Brits think Obama will get re-elected, so they’re not too bothered about it.  What are you guys hearing?

What Others Are Saying

I hate to do this, but to be fair to Mitt Romney, that comment has been somewhat taken out of context. I watched the video, and he was speaking at a fund-raising dinner. What he meant, clear in the context, was that he’s not going to worry about trying to win the vote of that 47%, because they are committed to Obama. He then went on to talk about the 5% of voters who he could reasonably expect to persuade. So it was a comment about tactics.

As for what Brits think about the American election, I think most of us are appalled at how right wing Mitt Romney is. We can’t quite believe him.

I take your point about the context. But I remain ever-stymied about what the Republican party wants to tell American women they’re allowed to do with their bodies. It seems like the stuff you’d read in a terrifying future-ish-sci-fi book…
