Meeting my 70- year-old-American-woman-still-living in-Yorkshire-self.

I need to feel community and a connection to my city, especially as an “outsider”. For that reason alone, I check out ‘BBC Look North’ online to find out what’s happening… a gal needs to be in the know, right?

My Aldi breakfast cereal is long gone after my only visit there, but I was chewing away to my Tesco Ready Oats (golden syrup flavour ) and surprise!

North Yorkshire has one of the fastest growing populations in the UK due to an influx of older people, research shows. Elderly population has risen 21.5% since 2006! The headline read:

“Gray invasion swells population”

That made me laugh… maybe some of them wants to learn harp…?

But, oh golly a swell of white haired people everywhere.

“Excuuuuse me, lurve”, they will say, “where does this bus go? I can’t see the bus sign!”

Gosh gollee gee, I won’t ever escape it!

I then started to feel annoyed about my already-set-in-its-ways- city becoming even more and more and more and more set in its little ways… grey haired people everywhere….an invasion of scooters cramming my street….ahhh!!!

(But alas, I can usually find the positive, even after a mini-episode of my very active imagination.)

Hang on a minute …I guess that’s not so bad to be surrounded by pensioners, because when I grow older and I am still here I’ll have lots of elderly friends to Marks and Sparks it with too. Bring on the bingo halls and getting older in Yorkshire.   I’ll be well equipped from the council in my granny flat! Bingo wings? Make mine bingo FLAPS!! I’ll have the latest mercedes-benz scooter, make mine a convertible because it will be global warming and finally warm here!

So then I go back to finishing my last Ready Oats bite,  sighing with happiness as I fantasise about my 70- year-old-American-woman-still-living in-Yorkshire-self.

Heck, I’ll still probably even be eating the same thing….
