Obama-mania is here to stay

yahooavatar15I think that Obama must be the most famous person in the world today. It is indescribable how the world can change overnight. Do you feel it too?

Even BBC Radio 1 is playing rap songs dedicated to the man!

For the first time EVER I walked to work today wanting to shout “I AM AMERICAN” — amidst the smoggy purple Acomb buses, shitty rain clouds, and scowls on fellow commuter’s faces. “HAVE HOPE “, I wanted to scream.

As mentioned in an earlier post Fran found me at the 10:15 am tea break as predicted.  She cornered me with her big boobed figure and said:

“I think that he is going to be assassinated”.

Offended and annoyed I offered, “THAT’S a horrible thing to say, why would you say that?”

“Because Kennedy was” she said, as if she can predict the future.

“Well lets hope not” I said wanting to know how someone can be so insensitive. On the first day of hope Fran said that first??

My gosh, English people can be so weird some times.

Yep, same thing at my work. A guy I work with must have said it three times yesterday that Obama was going to be assasinated.

Just a suggestion: As an American female in Yorkshire I really like the idea of your blog! But…maybe you three could have your icon showing on each post to distinguish more clearly who is writing what–otherwise it sort of runs together like it’s just one person writing everything. The icon would really set each post apart moreso than just the name.

I love the blog! I’m also an American woman in Yorkshire!

Is there any chance of syndication of this blog? I fail at keeping up with my google reader but I am always on Live Journal. I do have other wordpress blog feeds on my friends list so I know it’s possible, there’s a huge Brit-American following on Live Journal who would also love to read this blog.

I’m trying to figure out the syndication thing, but I’m having a time figuring it out! It’s not looking like I’m gonna make it happen within my lunch hour. I’ll keep trying :)

I had a similar experience at work yesterday… I was so happy and relieved that Obama was elected… I was even (dare I say it) feeling PROUD to be an American for a change…

when I got to work, someone asked me “are you happy Obama got elected? well, how long before he gets ASSASINATED?” Which resulted in other people bringing out all the stereotypes of America… “KKK”…”Bible bashers” etc- I swear, its as if their view of America has been formed from viewing reruns of Jerry Springer and CSI (and the occasional weekend holiday in Las Vegas)…

side note: I was in a shop the other day, talking with the woman at the till, and a man behind me asked, “Are you American? I HATE Americans… my mother always said American men are ALL TALK”…

    uh… okayyyy…

I can’t believe she just came out and said ‘I hate Americans’. WHO DOES THAT??? Was she raised by wolves or apes or something??

A mean-spirited thing to say in the circs, but not weird though. We’re just honest and blunt in this country, occasionally too much so I think!

Again, it’s also the British thing about not misplacing optimism, I wouldn’t get offended by it, it’s not ultimately meant to be nasty (unlike saying “I hate America”).

In the UK we often hear about the KKK, far-right militias and bigotted red-necks– there’s an impression that he could be assassinated.

I’m mindful that the threat from such groups in the USA is over-played, as is the threat. But people expressing saying “he will/may be assassinated” is the British way of showing concern, of keeping grounded and realistic.

We may be blunt at times, but at least you know where you stand with a Brit. The best thing to do is try not to get offended, but see the funny side where possible– we British make joke about anything– it’s how we cope with living here [LOL]
