Allow myself to introduce myself

pacific birdAt last! We have a place, a safe place to chat, celebrate, and sometimes commiserate with other women like us.  The three of us arrived in Yorkshire at different times and for different reasons.  Separately we have had some similar experiences and now we can share them together… with you.

I arrived here three years ago intending to study for one year and then return back to the Pacific Northwest.  Some volunteer work turned into a job opportunity and a wonderful cohabitation plan turned into exhilarating marriage plans.  So here I am, suddenly somewhere between girlfriend and wife making joint long-term decisions about which country to settle in and why.  That is for another post at another time.

In the meantime it might be helpful to know that I am a community development worker doing outreach and support for families affected by drug and alcohol abuse of a loved one.  The outreach part of my job means that I work in a variety of public places and this provides endless opportunity for reflection.  I won’t talk about the families that I work with, but I will talk about the people who come and go while I am out trying to reach a new family.

Also, I am a big picture gal most of the time.  So I apologize in advance for errors of detail such as spelling and grammar, and occasionally errors of tact.  But that is part of the point of this blog after all, at least to allow room for complete honesty.

So, American women living in the UK contribute and let us know if you share some of our feelings.

Here we go…

What Others Are Saying

The other day, I had a man tell me “Good Lass”, for having done something pretty insignificant…

    I half-expected a followup pat on the head- or a biscuit…

Awesome!! It’s so true about ‘bird’!

I’ve also noticed that some British men will say ‘good girl’ to me if I’ve done something friendly like hold the door open for them or something. That drives me UP the wall…
